The Love of Money – Cancer

“For the love of money is a root all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:10

Do not overcomplicate this. Just think!

You have the power to create money, yet you are in debt? How is that possible? If you had a money tree in your back yard, would you sell it?

This is the beginning of understanding our cancer, and we are only treating the symptoms. There are many theories, some conspiracy. At the root is the love of money fueled by envy and selfish ambition.

Jesus overturned whose tables?

Envy and Selfish Ambition

If there is a lot of money, prices go up. When money is short, prices go down. Where does the money go when it’s short? Where does it come from when there’s plenty?

When it’s plentiful, the money comes from loans. When money is short, someone stopped offering as many loans or started charging more for those loans.

So, if I were evil and greedy, and had control of the money, here is what I would do. I would offer to loan money at low rates. People would borrow to buy stuff; houses, cars, land, buildings, and even stocks. As long as I did this, prices would continue to rise. The money I loan actually has very little value, but what it buys does. I really want the stuff.

Now, I raise interest rates to borrow new money. In some cases, I offered to loan them the money at a really low rate, with the understanding that if interest rates go up, I can raise the rate I’m charging them. Money is now tight or too expensive to borrow. You can’t afford the new interest rate, you default, and now I have the stuff.

Some Things to Think About

  • Your government can create money, but is in debt. That make sense?
  • If the government isn’t creating money, then who is?
  • Houses, cars, companies, and other property are the collateral to back up most loans. What is the collateral on a student loan?
  • What can we do about it?

Faith in God

I’ve hesitated to write this blog because I’m not a preacher and I’ve not been to seminary. Yet, I feel like something has to be said.

Recently I read this on Facebook. “God is up to something big just for you. He is preparing to bless you. No matter what, stay focused and stay the course. You’re going to be blessed because of your persistence and faith.”

Another from a wealthy pastor. “Understand that if God planted you somewhere, he’s established you in the proper soil to facilitate prosperity,” T.D. Jakes.

Others have used verses of scripture out of context or left words out of a verse. Why? You’d have to ask them. Let me give you an example. The Newsboys have a song that says, “You make all things work together for my good.” Sounds great but they are playing off of Romans 8:28 that actually says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” You decide if those say the same thing?

Another is Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” In this passage God was talking to Jeremiah at a specific time and place.

Rather, Jesus  said this, “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of this world, even as I am not of it.” John 17:14-16

Later in the same chapter Jesus prayed, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:24

God is eternal. This world is not. The things we have here will rust and deteriorate. Understanding God is something that we are not capable of. His power and wisdom, we cannot fathom.

There will be people that are going through things that will not make it. Believers that live in unbelievable poverty. Followers of Jesus that will be killed simply for believing. Disasters that are impossible to understand.

Taking scripture out of context and making promises such as prosperity in this world that may or may not happen cheapens the gospel. Faith in God is so much bigger!

It comforts a mother who has lost a child or a wife who has lost a husband. Faith gives hope for eternity in illness because this isn’t our home. Knowing that Jesus prayed, “I want those you have given me to be with me where I am.”

Have faith that gives hope in love. The ultimate love that gives us eternal life with Him.

Focused Control

Understanding this is a key to either success or failure whether you are on a baseball field, planning for your future financially, trying to lose weight, or life in general. Baseball has been a part of my life either as a player or a coach since I was 5 years old. I’m almost 47 now. It wasn’t until my 11th year coaching that this finally clicked. If I had understood this at an earlier age, I might have played longer than I did.

There are things that we can control and then there are things that we can’t control. Focusing on what we can’t control is a recipe for failure and if we continue focus on what we can’t control long enough, it will lead to misery and possibly depression.

There are parallels to my baseball career and my career in the financial industry. As a player, the beginning of the end came when my focus turned from what I had control of verses what I didn’t. The exact same thing happened in my career in the financial industry. In college as a player during my freshman year of baseball, I began to struggle for the first time. I went from starting every day to playing very little. Rather than focusing on what I had control of I began to make excuses and focused the guy starting in front of me and the coach. Neither of which I had any control over. The only thing I had control of was to do what got me there in the first place. Hours in the cage. Hours in the weight room. Running and being a good teammate. Focusing on Jeff and Coach Mewbourne did nothing to get me back in the lineup but it did lead to misery and ultimately to my failure as a player.

Focusing on what I couldn’t control also lead to the end of my financial career. I became obsessed with the one thing that I couldn’t control, the stock market. After watching people lose half of their life savings in 2008, I wanted to do everything in my power to prevent that from happening to them again. At night before I went to bed, I had to see what the markets were doing overseas. As soon as I woke up the next morning, I would grab my phone to see how the overseas markets finished and how the day was going to begin here. Constantly throughout the day, I was checking the markets. I was miserable and at home, I was distant. My wife told me this more than once, “you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. You protect them from loss, they will yell at you for not making as much money as they could have. They lose money, they will yell at you because you didn’t protect them and it’s killing you and your family is paying the price.” In September of 2017, I walked away.

Just the other day, I had a former client reach out to me, and the conversation that we had is the inspiration for this video. His exact words were, “We need to talk because I don’t want to lose what I have saved.” He went on to say, “I know there are no guarantees, but I also know that you can move it to a safe place if things start south.” What he said is both dangerous and naïve and makes him vulnerable. What he said he knows doesn’t exist, but there are plenty of salesmen that will tell him it does.

In my 18 years in the financial industry, I learned what you can control and what you can’t. Most people when they come into a financial adviser’s office will focus on what they can’t control and believe that the adviser can control what the advisor can’t. My hope is that there are people watching this video reach out to me to learn these things because knowing what you can control and what you can’t could save you thousands if not tens of thousands in fees and prevent you from becoming a victim because of ignorance.

Take a moment now and think. What do you have control of and what do you not have control of? Which do you focus on? For athletes, do you have control of the person that you are competing against on the other team or the person on your team who you are competing with for a position? No, so don’t focus on them or what they are doing. Focus on what you have control of and that is you!  If you get beat, learn from it, use what you learned, and go back to work.

In planning for your life financially. Learn what you have control of and what you do not. If you don’t know what to focus on, Mickey Ellison, Inc exists to teach you.

If you want to lose weight, focus on what you can control. This is one of the few things that I have done and have maintained. In a future video, I will share with you how I’ve done it and why I’ve been successful. It’s something I call The Process, and it applies not only to weight loss but is vital for athletes and in life.

Finally, what do you focus on? That which you can or cannot control. Things are going to happen that we have no control of but how we respond is in our control. Nothing can change the past, so don’t let your past dictate your future. Focus your control because what you focus on will control you. And, what you can’t control, leave to God.

Without Love, I Am Nothing

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and gave my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is LOVE.” 1 Corinthians 13

Depart From Me

It’s real easy to point fingers and avoid the truth. The message from Matthew 25:41-46 is the truth. How many times have I passed someone that is hungry and didn’t feed them when I had the resources to do so? Children without clothes, people sleeping outside when it’s freezing, and I did nothing.

What will God say when we stand before Him? Will we tell Him they suffer because they deserve it since they made bad decisions? Have I ever watched something I knew I shouldn’t. Have I ever stolen something? Have I ever lusted knowing the definition of adultery given by Jesus? How wretched am I? How wretched are we all?

We talk as if God needs us. We call ourselves successful and we show it by houses and cars and other material items. And, we have the nerve to say we earned them.

Think about our arrogance. God spoke things into existence. The earth, the moon, the stars, and the entire universe and we think He needs us? How deluded we are!

Will He say I blessed you beyond any people to walk the earth and you dishonored me? You built large houses. You bought cars. You built cathedrals. You did all this as if I needed it. I didn’t give you this abundance so you can retire. I warned you about the farmer who built barns only to die.

You could have fed the entire world. You threw away food that could have fed millions. You entertained yourselves with movies, sports, and concerts while my people were starving and being persecuted and killed because of My name. Get away from me, I never knew you!

God, break our hearts. Open our eyes and point those fingers back at us because we are guilty. We have sinned and because you are merciful, we don’t have to get what we deserve. We deserve Hell but instead You sent your Son as the perfect sacrifice. He took what I deserve and because of that I will live my life as Jesus taught. And, ask your forgiveness when I fail. You are God of all. You are the creator of all with wisdom I’m not capable of understanding. Despite the wretch I am you love me and provided me with eternal salvation despite deserving eternal damnation. Amen

“”Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:41-46‬ ‭NIV‬‬

It Almost Killed Me and It Still Could

There have been many nights  when I’ve thought, “My family would be better off without me. I have life insurance and that would make them debt free.” What has stopped me is my love for my wife and two boys, and faith in God that He can use our story to free others. Sometimes that faith is strong and at other times it is very weak. Those weak times scare me.

The weak moments make me think of others. No matter what someone looks like on the outside, there could be a storm brewing inside of them. They may look healthy. They may look like they have everything, but unless you can get inside their head, you have no idea. When you gossip with others about them, you are probably so far off the mark it isn’t funny, and what you are doing is WRONG! They could be one word away from ending it all. You want to be responsible for that?

In the last few years, comments have been made to me about people in debt, and I’ve remained quiet. One was about how there is no way they would help someone who has credit card debt. How ashamed would they be if they knew we did? They went on to say some other things and I didn’t say a word. Do they know that at 24 years old, I tried to start a business that failed? They know the business failed and we had no income when it did?  Do they know that we had to live in a 1 bedroom apartment for two years as the debt continued to grow despite my wife and I both working? Were they there to see the panic attacks at 26 years old? A feeling as if you are having a heart attack and no one knows. No, they simply made one of the meanest comments to someone that had lived through hell and by the grace of God is still here.

The last 22 years have been a mental and emotional hell. One that I’ve kept inside with smiles on the outside and tears on the inside. The thing is, if our hell can be used to free others, then every panic attack will have been worth it. There is over $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. A trillion more in credit card debt along with trillions more in mortgages and car loans. That means there has to be millions more like us! They feel hopeless and because of our opinionated and cruel society, they are afraid to say anything.

For those that feel no pity or have no sympathy for people who are in debt, just go away. You are not welcome.

Mission Freedom

For those of you that do have sympathy or empathy, welcome! There is hope and if we work together with no selfish ambition, there is freedom. The question is, despite your own circumstances can you give? Will you give? Will you believe? Is there 1 million people out there that will give $30.50 a month to become a part of a mission where 100% of those dollars will be used to eliminate the debt of those giving?

Are you willing:

  1. To give $30.50 a month. One dollar a day in leap years. One extra dollar with 365 days.
  2. For at least one month, write down every penny you spend and what it paid for?
  3. Agree to use no form of credit to purchase anything unless it’s an emergency or you talk to a mentor?
  4. To be accountable to someone?
  5. Willing to share all debts with our mission in confidence? Why?

We will attack the smallest debts of the group first and move on from there. We will only write checks made payable directly to the creditor. And we will use 100% of what is given to the freedom fund to reduce debt.

Then we will pray that someone will sponsor us to spread this mission throughout the entire country. Who knows what we will be able to do when millions are debt free?

Debt almost killed me. It will kill someone and it doesn’t have to be this way. There is hope. That hope is us. And, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!” 2 Corinthians 3:17

Mission for Freedom

What was once considered a curse is considered a blessing and is now a mission for freedom.

The mission is simple. Destroy debt! Twenty three years of being a slave has educated me on the horror that is personal debt. Eighteen years in the financial industry woke me up to how we are all slaves to debt whether we have personal debt of not. Those with personal debt know all too well how debt has enslaved them. The challenge is for people without personal debt to understand that they are slaves to debt as well.

Understanding how personal debt enslaves the people that are in debt is easy. Just ask anyone that has student loans or credit card debt and no idea how they will ever get out.  Understanding how debt threatens the freedom of all of us is difficult but simple.

My wife and I have dealt with personal debt for over 23 years from a failed business. Some of you have been paying on student loans that could be with you until you are in the grave unless something changes. Others are slaves to debt simply because of their own personal desires and now find themselves in a living hell. Thirty year mortgages and seven year car loans haunt others. What if all of us decided to fight each others’ debt together rather than alone? How fast could we free one another? What if every church in America joined us? Mission number one is a debt free body of Christ!

Debt is the greatest threat to freedom ever created by man!

The challenge for many to understand this is because we have allowed ourselves to be divided by politics and our own ignorance. Understanding our financial system will change how one views politics and until you do, you will argue in ignorance.

My hope and prayer is that millions will join in this fight against debt. We will be creating a fund where 100% of the money given to the fund will be used to help free individuals and families from their prison. Even if you are in debt yourself, could you give $10,$20, or $30 a month to free someone else? Selfish ambition got each of us in this mess. Selfless ambition can get us out.

Freeing one another is the first step toward freedom. Understanding debt can free us all!

We are starting this mission with nothing more than a Facebook page and prayers that some of you support this mission financially and invite us to speak. You can reach us by commenting on this post or on our Facebook page, Mission Freedom. Or by email, mickeyellison71@gmail.com

God Bless!

Stand Firm

What is the purpose of Armour? Obviously it is for protection, but let’s be honest. Most of us will never need the knight’s helmet or sword. We’re probably never going to need a shield to protect us from real arrows being shot at us from an enemy.. But, everyone that is seeking to earnestly serve God does need the Full Armour of God.

This life can be brutal and if we aren’t protected by His armour we subject to powers that we can’t even see. The most potent force we will ever face can’t even be seen. Think about what Paul wrote in Ephesians 6, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Those spiritual forces will use anything and everything against us to keep us away from God.

The first thing Paul mentions for our protection is the belt of truth. What is truth? Jesus said, “I am the way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” As a believer in Christ, we should know the Truth. Jesus himself told us what the truth is. A non-believer will think we are crazy, but Paul also told us about that in 1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Next is the breastplate of righteousness. Got Questions.org gives a much better description of the breastplate than I can. We are made righteous through the blood of Jesus. Paul writes about this in Chapter 3 of Philippians, “More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having my own righteousness from law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God on the basis of faith.” Christ makes us righteous, and our works are evidence of our belief.

From there, Paul writes about our feet being fitted with the readiness that comes through the gospel of peace. Having the belt of truth, Christ, and being made righteous through him, having proper shoes allow us to move in battle. Those powers of darkness mentioned earlier will attack and we must be able to move or stand firm. Got questions explains the purpose of our feet being fitted with readiness both as offensive and defensive. Those shoes will help us stand firm in the gospel when we are in battle against the enemy but they also help us move to share the gospel of peace with others.

Paul then goes on to take up the shield of faith. We have our belt of truth on, wearing the breastplate of righteousness, with shoes to move. Now we have a shield to protect us. We are constantly being attacked by scientists, professors, teachers, and others that do not believe. Remember what Paul said about the message of the cross being foolishness to those who are perishing. Knowing this protects you from those that willfully want to attack such as some scientists and some professors. And, when sharing the gospel, you will be attacked by those that don’t believe and are unwilling to believe. In some parts of the world, you will even be persecuted or killed. That, I believe, is how those martyred could go to their death in peace.

Then there is the helmet of salvation. What a beautiful thing, the helmet of salvation. This is the assurance that no matter what happens in the battle, in life or in death, our salvation is secure. Nothing on this earth can take that away from us unless we allow ourselves to be led astray. This cannot happen if we have the final piece of Armour which is the sword of the Spirit. The Word of God.

Today, unlike any other day, scripture is at our fingertips in most parts of the world. Unfortunately not all. Paul, Peter, John, and Jesus warned us that there would be false teachers. False teachers are in great supply. Paul in one of his letters to Timothy went as far as to say that people would gather around them teachers that will teach what itching ears want to hear. So not only are there false teachers. There are those that seek them out because these teachers will teach what they want to hear versus what they need to hear.

Maybe the early believers had an excuse. Unlike us because they didn’t have the Bible accessible to them through apps on a phone or a computer. Today, in an instant, we can look up scripture to verify what the teacher is teaching or see if they are misleading by taking the words out of context. Whether they were intentionally taken out of context is between the teacher and God. But, we should always be on guard, realizing that there will be those that “peddle the gospel for profit.” And, the sword of the Spirit is our defense.

Stand Firm in God’s Armour!

Christians, We Must Become the Light of the World

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” 1 Peter 2:11-12

“For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.” 1 Peter 2:16

“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.” 1 Peter 3:8-11

We can spend our days worrying about what is wrong with the world. Fighting over what we think our politicians should do. Complaining about the cost of college and complaining about what is taught to our children in college. We fight with people on Facebook about politicians, sports, and anything else we can imagine. And worse yet, many of those complaining and fighting are Christians. We act as though we are powerless to do anything, yet we claim to follow the Creator of everything.

Do we believe there is only one God? Do we believe he is all powerful? Do we believe that He is the answer? If so, it’s time we start serving him and understand that simply believing He exists is not enough for James wrote, “You believe there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder.” James 2:19

For so long we have sat back living scared and acting powerless when God gave us all the answers through the pages of scripture. So many will pound the pulpits telling us what we should not do. Not that they are wrong, but what is so often not taught is what we should do, and it starts with loving God with all your heart mind and soul, then loving your neighbor as yourself.

Together, if it is God’s will, there is nothing that we can’t do. It’s time that we believers be the “light of the world….” (Matthew 5:14) And, live “doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility, VALUE OTHERS ABOVE YOURSELVES.” (Philippians 2:3)

There has never been a time in history when His light through us can shine brighter. A time when the whole world can see!
