There have been many nights when I’ve thought, “My family would be better off without me. I have life insurance and that would make them debt free.” What has stopped me is my love for my wife and two boys, and faith in God that He can use our story to free others. Sometimes that faith is strong and at other times it is very weak. Those weak times scare me.
The weak moments make me think of others. No matter what someone looks like on the outside, there could be a storm brewing inside of them. They may look healthy. They may look like they have everything, but unless you can get inside their head, you have no idea. When you gossip with others about them, you are probably so far off the mark it isn’t funny, and what you are doing is WRONG! They could be one word away from ending it all. You want to be responsible for that?
In the last few years, comments have been made to me about people in debt, and I’ve remained quiet. One was about how there is no way they would help someone who has credit card debt. How ashamed would they be if they knew we did? They went on to say some other things and I didn’t say a word. Do they know that at 24 years old, I tried to start a business that failed? They know the business failed and we had no income when it did? Do they know that we had to live in a 1 bedroom apartment for two years as the debt continued to grow despite my wife and I both working? Were they there to see the panic attacks at 26 years old? A feeling as if you are having a heart attack and no one knows. No, they simply made one of the meanest comments to someone that had lived through hell and by the grace of God is still here.
The last 22 years have been a mental and emotional hell. One that I’ve kept inside with smiles on the outside and tears on the inside. The thing is, if our hell can be used to free others, then every panic attack will have been worth it. There is over $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. A trillion more in credit card debt along with trillions more in mortgages and car loans. That means there has to be millions more like us! They feel hopeless and because of our opinionated and cruel society, they are afraid to say anything.
For those that feel no pity or have no sympathy for people who are in debt, just go away. You are not welcome.
For those of you that do have sympathy or empathy, welcome! There is hope and if we work together with no selfish ambition, there is freedom. The question is, despite your own circumstances can you give? Will you give? Will you believe? Is there 1 million people out there that will give $30.50 a month to become a part of a mission where 100% of those dollars will be used to eliminate the debt of those giving?
Are you willing:
- To give $30.50 a month. One dollar a day in leap years. One extra dollar with 365 days.
- For at least one month, write down every penny you spend and what it paid for?
- Agree to use no form of credit to purchase anything unless it’s an emergency or you talk to a mentor?
- To be accountable to someone?
- Willing to share all debts with our mission in confidence? Why?
We will attack the smallest debts of the group first and move on from there. We will only write checks made payable directly to the creditor. And we will use 100% of what is given to the freedom fund to reduce debt.
Then we will pray that someone will sponsor us to spread this mission throughout the entire country. Who knows what we will be able to do when millions are debt free?
Debt almost killed me. It will kill someone and it doesn’t have to be this way. There is hope. That hope is us. And, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!” 2 Corinthians 3:17
